The WOW project is a creative expression of who you are and/or what you want to contribute to the community. The only rule is that it should make people go “wow that’s cool”
Your WOW project serves a couple of purposes:
- It is an opportunity to introduce yourself to the community creatively without restrictions
- You can show us that you are willing to put time and creativity into the community
- It’s a prompt for you to have fun, an excuse to do something you are no reason to do otherwise

Perhaps the best way is to show you some Amsterdam hub members and their WOWs.
Rhys
Rhys did a research project into creating a Sandbox branded notebook from scratch. He sourced all the materials and required machinery, and constructed this notebook. He is passing around this notebook among the community and asking people to write into it their favorite how-tos and recipes. We loved this project as an expression of Rhys’s abilities an an engineer.
Isabella
Isa chose to express her professional expertise in creating inclusive company policies into a helpful guidebook that the Amsterdam hub can use to emphasise specific dimensions of our community to make it more welcoming to a wide group of people. Combined with spirited and helpful conversations her wow helped us hone in on specific areas where we try to improve.
How are WOWs “judged”
When reviewing your WOW, the Amsterdam ambassadors keep a number of things in mind. They also check against a number of red flags.
✅ Did this take creative effort?
✅ Does this signal a contribution to the community?
✅ Is there a hard to quantify “wow” factor?
❌ Is this recycled (existing) material?
❌ Would the member have done this project anyway?
❌ Does it feel more like work than fun?
Note that these are guideline questions and not “grading criteria”. Matching one of the criteria can be sufficient to make us excited about your WOW. It all depends on who you are and what you are doing. The criteria are vague on purpose, to give the maximum amount of space to express yourself.
When in doubt, chat to the current ambassadors to see if the direction you are thinking makes sense. But don’t be afraid to surprise us!
